It is plucked when the leaves are at a very young stage with only a bud and a single unfolding leaf. Harvested before the spring rains, Huang Shan Mao Feng is one of China''s top 10 famous green teas. The dry leaf, comprised of tender young buds or sprouts, one leaf, one leaf and one bud, or two leaves and one bud. This young age produces a subtle, fresh and vegetal, refined and sweet almost, with a hint of licorice taste. The tea liquid is a bright, clear, pale yellow. Huangshan Maofeng was first produced during the latter part of the 19th century, during the Qing Dynasty, by a tea specialist named Xie Jinghe. It was named Maofeng for the appearance of the tea buds, being fluffy (mao), and for their growing location on high mountain peaks (feng). The Huangshan mountain range is found in China''s southern Anhui province, China. These mountains are frequently found in traditional Chinese paintings and literature due to hard granite peaks, protruding from among weathered pines, surrounded by swirling clouds. This make for ideal growing conditions. |
